tanya vreboschWhat are you supposed to do with a burnt out or broken fluorescent light bulb?

Chair of Engineering and Works Tanya Vrebosch says the recycling depot will dispose of them, but it came at a cost of $15-thousand dollars.

However, she says a new program is coming into effect where a company will collect those bulbs and takes care of that cost.

Vrebosch says this is welcoming news as getting rid of these light bulbs took a lot of care and effort.

She says due to the mercury inside the bulbs they had to be handled in a different way, and this company will now do all of that.

Meantime, the city will have to spend $250,000 on specialized clay, needed to line a new section of the Merrick Landfill.

Vrebosch says the Bruman Construction Inc. won that tender and that was the lowest bid price. She says this allows them to compact more at the landfill which increases its overall life sustainability.
