NU lakers A tough night on the ice for the Nipissing Lakers as both the Men and Women opened the season with overtime losses at Memorial Gardens.  Meantime, the Lakers men’s soccer team played to a draw with Queens.

In OUA Women’s Hockey the Lakers dropped their season opener 2-1 in overtime to the Laurentian Voyaguers.

The Voyaguers opened the scoring in the first before Bronwyn Bolduc tied the game in the second. The teams traded great chances in the third period but both goaltenders were solid between the pipes.

In the overtime period MacAuley Carr was able to slid a puck in past Jackie Rochefort to get the win for the Voyaguers. Nipissing will try to get back on track next weekend, hosting two more home games – Friday versus Waterloo at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. against Laurier.

On the men’s side the Lakers played host to the RMC Paladins in the Military Appreciation Game. The Lakers built up a 3-0 lead with two goals from Mackenzie Keirstead and one by Jacob Conrad.

After scoring a shorthanded goal as well, the Lakers took a 4-1 into the third, but RMC stormed back in a thrilling third period.

Scott Domenico scored twice while Mitchell Hewson and Mathieu Lavallee added goals to give RMC a 5-4 lead. Lakers forward Erik Robichaud scored his second goal of the game with 3-minutes to play to tie the game.

It stayed that way for the rest of regulation and in the overtime frame Bennett Huber scored at 3:54 for a 6-5 overtime win. It was the first win in 29 tries for the RMC Paladins, who were 0-23-3 last season and had lost the last three games of the previous season as well.

The Lakers will be back in action Oct. 14 when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs.
