John Lennon
It’s been 35-years since legendary Beatles frontman John Lennon’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence perpetrated by a supposed fan, a 25-year-old man named Mark David Chapman. Chapman waited for Lennon to return to his New York City apartment on the eve of December 8, 1980, at which point he fired 5 shots from a .38 caliber revolver into the former Beatle legends back. Lennon was rushed to a nearby hospital where hundreds gathered, holding vigil as they waited for a doctor to deliver news of his condition. John Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival around 11pm at Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, killed by the same man he signed an autograph for earlier that evening. Lennon’s ashes were scattered in New York’s Central Park. Lennon was 40-years-old at the time of his death, leaving behind a wife, two children and millions of adoring fans all around the world. As performer, writer or co-writer, Lennon garnished some impressive accolades, including 25 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1981. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and is a two-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and solo artist in 1994.
