NU lakersPlenty of Lakers action on Saturday, featuring the men’s and women’s hockey, basketball, and volleyball.

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team had plenty of celebrations last night.

Three players, who have been with the team since they first arrived at the school, have graduated from their respected courses, Lakers goalie Micaela Stutzki had a 15 save game last night, which was her first OUA win, and the first goal ever scored by Victoria Bugg. All this and more during last night’s game against the UOIT Ridgebacks, where Nipissing also celebrated a 6-1 victory.

The Lakers opened up the scoring early in the game with a late first period goal by Sam Strassburger with assists by Zosia Davis and Brooklyn Irwin.

The Ridgebacks responded early in the second to tie up the game, but the rest was all Nipissing.

The next goal for the local team was from Carly Marchment, assisted by Kaley Tienhaara and Ava Keis.

It was then Taylor Murphy’s time to shine scoring the third goal of the game, followed swiftly by Strassburger once again assisted by Irwin.

Marchment would get her second goal of the game with assists by Tienhaara and Jade Gauthier.

Then came the third period where Stacey Henshaw, assisted by Marchment, made the game 5-1.

And finally to wrap up the game for the Lakers, Victoria Bugg, with her first career goal, ended the game with the final score of 6-1. Bugg was assisted by Kaitlyn McManus and Bronwyn Bolduc.

The Lakers walked away from their 13th game all geared up for their season finale against the Guelph Gryphons. The team gets the week off, as that game goes next Sunday.

A great game that saw the best of the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team on Friday. However, last night they were not able to keep up with the UQTR Patriotes offence, losing 8-1 at Memorial Gardens.

Less than 4 minutes after the opening buzzer, the Patriotes scored the opening goal and three more before the end of the period. At the end of the second, UQTR was now in the lead by 6.

They scored again against the Lakers in the third but this time, Nipissing responded with one of their own. Jimmy McDowell, with an assist by Mackenzie Keirstead, scored the only goal for Nipissing last night.

The only goal in the third was from the Patriotes who walked away victorious.

Kirk Rafuse was pulled from the game after allowing 4 goals in the first and was relieved by Domenic Graham. Graham then had to leave the game due to a shoulder injury, leaving Rafuse in net for the remainder of the game.

Guillaume Asselin scored 5 points for UQTR, as the Patriotes outshot the Lakers 33-28.

The Lakers now travel to face Queens and UOIT next weekend. The Lakers cannot climb as they sit sixth in the standings, but they could still fall further in the rankings after next week’s games.
