Trappers Classic goes tonight, while Saginaw adds local coach to their bench and North Stars traveled to Kitchener

The Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League have a local presence behind the bench.

Former NHLer and Sturgeon Falls native Moe Mantha will take over as the Head Coach of the team on an interim basis. Mantha was previously serving as the teams Northern Ontario Scout while also coaching the French River Rapids of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Spirit are eighth in the OHL’s Western Conference and they announced earlier today (Tuesday) they had fired Greg Gilbert after four seasons with the team.

Mantha had a 12 year career as a player in the NHL

Trappers Classic

A long time volunteer will be honored tonight (Tuesday).

The West Ferris Trappers Classic will honor West Ferris Minor Hockey Association President Jim Hall.

This is the 2nd Annual event which takes place at the Bill Barber Sports Complex in Callander at 6pm.

The game will comprise the West Ferris Minor AA Atom Trappers and the West Ferris Major AA Novice Trappers.

North Bay North Stars

A fun weekend for the North Bay North Stars who participated in the Kitchener Ice Pirates friendship tournament.

Both the A and B teams competed in three games each, attended a banquet and a dance party on Saturday night. The games were played at the Kitchener Auditorium.

The North Stars are the only special hockey team in Northern Ontario.
