The Ministry of the Environment says there needs to be a Leachate Treatment Plant at the Merrick Landfill.

Chair of Engineering and Works Tanya Vrebosch says Leachate is the water run-off from the landfill and the plant would treat the water before hit hits the creek near the landfill. The creek runs towards Sturgeon and Vrebosch says the old treatment is no longer up to standards.

She says natural insinuation isn’t enough anymore and they have to have a new system in place.

She says there is no government funding and this is paid for solely by the municipality.

The project will cost $4.2-million.

Vrebosch says the Ministry of the environment requires this process to be done in order for the city to operate a landfill site.
