The future of King’s Landing will be explored through a new environmental study.

The city awarded the contract of the study to be done for $213,000.

Councilor Darryl Vaillancourt says this is needed to move forward with developing that area.

He says this could be the start of a major development and not just a touch up for Kings Landing.

He says the thinking is if you are going to spend $2.5-3 million to rehabilitate Kings Landing, it makes more sense to go to the province or the feds to leverage that money and create an even bigger project.

Vaillancourt says they wouldn’t be able to approach the other levels of government without doing this study first.

Not every councilor was in approval of doing the study.

Chair of Community Services Mark King says this isn’t a necessary step, and what they should do would only cost a couple million dollars.

He says “I think we need to spend the $2.8-million over a period of time, I think we could do it a lot cheaper than that. The center portion is cement and solid, there are no structural problems with it.

Council voted 9-2 in favour of moving the study forward.
