Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that Apple holds a patent on technology that could prevent texting and driving, yet refuses to deploy it. “If you’re at Apple or you’re at Samsung, do you want to be the first to block texting and driving?” says former National Safety Council analyst David Teater. “A customer might say, ‘If Apple does it, then my next phone is a Samsung.’” On the other hand, he notes, “If Apple had deployed this technology 10 years ago, there would be more people alive today.
