A North Bay-based company is in the provincial spotlight.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault was in the city this morning (Wednesday) highlighting SuperSHELL’s work in building energy efficient homes for residents around the north.

Officials say SuperSHELL homes, which include layers of mineral wool to insulate versus spray foam insulation, are three times as insulated as an Energy Star home and can reduce energy costs by up to 50 per cent.

The company employs local labourers, carpenters and First Nations people to build super energy efficient homes around the North.

SuperSHELL is currently building more energy efficient homes in the remote First Nation community in Marten Falls, about 300 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.

One of the owners Ross Maclean says using mineral wool is more expensive but it will save you money in the long term.

Minister Thibault says the province is addressing energy prices and the impact will be felt soon.  He says rates will be reduced by 8 per cent at the end of the month.

He says they will also be addressing some of the cost issues that that rural customers pay.
