An update from North Bay Police about Wednesday afternoon’s collision involving a cyclist at Lakeshore and Judge.

A female cyclist suffered non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle and has been treated and released from hospital.

Police say a four-door car was heading northbound towards the overpass on a green light, while the cyclist failed to yield while crossing Lakeshore on the wrong side of the road and in the pedestrian crosswalk.

No charges were laid.

The collision happened just after 2 pm and resulted in the closure of the northbound lane of the overpass.

That caused traffic delays on Lakeshore, and along Memorial Drive, with the added influx of vehicles making their way to the other end of the city.

Before getting on your bike, the North Bay Police Service advises cyclists to learn the rules of the road, make sure you’re well-equipped, watch for hazards, and ride responsibility.

Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, a bicycle is a vehicle.

Cyclists must:

  • ride on the right hand side of the road, with the flow of traffic;
  • stay as close to the right edge of the road whenever possible;
  • obey all traffic signs and signals; and
  • walk their bicycles when using pedestrian crosswalks.

Know your hand signals! Riding responsibility includes signaling to drivers before you make a move to turn or to stop.
