A rare occurrence is taking place in the sky this afternoon (Monday).

A total solar eclipse is venturing across the U-S, coast to coast for the first time since 1918, with a partial eclipse here in Canada.

North Bay Astronomy Club director Merlin Clayton says we’ll get about 60 percent coverage locally.

He says the club will have their telescopes set up at the waterfront with some of the special filters required to look at the sun.

They’ll be there at about noon.

Officials also warn your eyes can suffer serious damage without special filters.

NASA says special solar eclipse glasses should be marked with the “ISO 12312-2” international safety standard on the label, making sure there are no scratches on the lenses.
