Friday would’ve been Scott Weiland’s 50th birthday, and to mark the occasion, the late Stone Temple Pilots frontman’s two teenage children, Noah and Lucy, have shared a playlist of songs that remind them of their father.
The playlist includes a variety of Weiland’s own songs, such as STP’s “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart” and Velvet Revolver’s “She Builds Quick Machines,” as well as tracks like Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone.”
“This song is about Billie [Joe Armstrong] losing his dad, and even before I lost my dad I always felt connected to it,” Noah writes about “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Of “Since You’ve Been Gone,” Lucy writes, “Not a song that you would expect to find on a Scott Weiland playlist, but he was my dad, and every dad with a little girl when this song came out was probably familiar with it. He even took us to her concert and danced with me on his shoulders while I rocked out with my little fists in the air.”
The surviving members of Stone Temple Pilots also shared a statement in commemoration of Weiland’s birthday. “Happy Birthday Scott. 50 years ago today the world was given a gift,” they wrote. “Thank you for all you gave us.”
Weiland died December 3, 2015 of an accidental overdose. He was 48.
