The Near North District School Board says there are accommodation pressures at Chippewa Secondary School and they have to ensure the instructional space required is set by the fall of 2019.

That’s when the number of high schools will be reduced from 3 to 2 with Widdifield closing at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

Board chair David Thompson says their continuing to make adjustments to their plan.

For example, french immersion students at Chippewa who are zoned for Sunset Park will be going to West Ferris Secondary School in the fall of this year a year earlier than scheduled.

“I believe there are 5 classrooms for French Immersion starting at West Ferris and that’s for the Sunset kids that are going to Chippewa now. The kids that have gone through the Sunset French Immersion will be able to stay at their home high school which is going to be West Ferris.”
He says there still a lot of unanswered questions.

“Real enrolment may affect some decisions. We want to make sure we’ve got as much information before we make any final decisions. That can be very frustrating for parents and students and we completely understand that.”
