Public health officials were celebrating the new Health Unit building on Oak Street West on Wednesday.
It was the official opening of the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s new $20 million facility.
The building is home to all public health services offered by the Health Unit.
Before they were scattered amongst different locations.
Medical Officer of Health Jim Chirico tells BayToday the new downtown building is just right.
“Because it’s on bus routes, they (the public) can get here and there’s bicycle paths and just to have everybody on site, we can work collaborate and work together to provide all of those services,” he says.
By not having to pay rent on different locations, Chirico says the cost savings associated with the new building are tremendous.
“Financially, because of all the work that was done over the last number of years the building will be paid off, we don’t have a mortgage, we don’t have a loan, it will probably be paid off very shortly and all that money can go back into programming,” he says.
The new Health Unit building opened to the public May 14th at 345 Oak Street West.
