Two Widdifield students heading to Sweden in late August

Two local students are heading to Sweden later this summer for the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition.

Widdifield’s Emily Mah and Jazlyn McGuinty were shortlisted at the Canada-wide Science Fair after winning the Canadian Stockholm Junior Prize.

Jazlyn says she couldn’t be more thrilled.

“I was so excited to hear and get to participate in this event. I’m really grateful for the opportunity and we’re really excited to present our research in Sweden,” she says.

They’ve been selected for an all-expenses paid trip to Sweden August 24th to 30th. Their project involves the extraction of heavy metals from contaminated water.
Emily Mah says they thank all their science teachers and Mrs. Peterson their mentor. She say her message was do the research.

“We found about the amount of heavy metal contaminated water around the world and especially in Northern Ontario. We knew heavy metal is dangerous to humans and plants and we wanted to figure out a way to solve this problem,” Emily says.

Jazlyn says she wants to become a pediatrician and Emily wants to become a doctor as well.
