Units affected by bed bugs at two District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board properties are being professionally treated.

This from DNSSAB officials who say five units are affected at the Golden Age Apartments and another five at the Edgewater Apartments.

The treatment plan involves regular follow-up inspections and repeated treatments if necessary.

They’re also out with tips to prevent or deal with bed bugs.

Officials say while they don’t carry diseases, bed bugs can be the source of anxiety and stress.

“One of the most common ways bed bugs get into your home is through your luggage after you travel, so a close inspection of your luggage when you get home is always a good idea. Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, but it’s important to also remove the harder to spot eggs. Avoiding clutter in your home, regularly vacuuming your mattress, and never bringing in discarded furniture and electronics into your home are some ways to prevent them from entering your home,” a release states. “Tenants are encouraged to let the landlord or property manager know immediately if they suspect they have bed bugs. This helps to deal with the situation before it worsens, and before it spreads to other units. Bed bugs can travel through the space between walls and through cracks and crevices. Sealing these areas with caulking can sometimes help. To learn more about the facts and myths about bed bugs, go to www.bedbugsinfo.ca”
