A rally in support of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in B.C. was held in front of MP Anthony Rota’s office on Thursday.

Those who gathered say they were there to show solidarity with the First Nation who are involved in a dispute regarding the Coastal GasLink pipeline project on their territory.

A protester identified as Holly says the authorities must do the right thing for all Canadians and First Nations people.

“I want to know that people in positions of power have my best interest in mind and will respect my rights,” she says.

The R-C-M-P has promised to pull out of an area in Wet’suwet’en territory — a key demand of the chiefs.

Donna Sinclair says the federal government must show more respect for Indigenous people moving forward

“I’d like the federal government to pick up its obligations for First Nations people. We have all these resources that could help us get to a far better relationship” Sinclair says.

She says they did meet with MP Rota Thursday.

Rota  has issued a release on that

“I have met with several of the key organizers and can respect where they are coming from. I also appreciate they arranged to present a statement to my office beforehand since the solidarity rally took place after business hours. This is a difficult situation for everyone. I welcome the opportunity to hear all points of view and a continuing national dialogue toward a peaceful resolution,” he says.
