Plenty of farms in Nipissing District

Farming is a big business in the north.

That’s the word from MPP Vic Fedeli who recently spoke at Queen’s Park about a new website.  He says FarmNorth.com is a great resource for anyone looking to enter the agricultural sector in the north.

The website shows there are 247 farms in Nipissing, covering 32,000 hectares. That information is according to the 2011 Census.

Fedeli highlighted the fact that 50-percent of Ontario’s canola is grown in the North, but that’s not all.  

He says 40 percent of Ontario’s oats are grown in northern Ontario.

Meantime, 2013 Farm Cash receipts totaled $9.2-million, with $2.6-million in dairy production and $1.1-million in cattle and calves.

The site also provides information on relevant organizations, a directory of agribusiness suppliers, research information, and important community contacts to help those interested successfully enter the agricultural sector in the North.
