A state of emergency has been declared in Mattawa with two feet of water being released by the Otto Holden Dam.

Officials say property owners in low lying areas next to the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers are being told to be prepared to evacuate if needed.

Mattawan Street from Main to Sid Turcotte Park Road and Timmins Street have been closed.

Meantime, a load of sand is coming in around 9 am with volunteers requested to help with sandbagging efforts at the Public Works Garage (Mill Street) in Mattawa.

Offiicals say students from the English and French high schools in Mattawa will be helping out, too.

Town officials advise:

  • Residents in need of sand bag support can call the municipal office at 705-744-5611
  • Roadways marked as closed are not to be passed as the integrity and safety of the road cannot be guaranteed and may pose a hazard.
  • Sand bags are to be used to protect homes and accommodations only

For more information on flooding, call the municipal office at 705-744-5611. For Emergency Services call: 911

Meantime, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has extended the flood warning in the North Bay District until Friday.
