For the first time the Nipissing Lakers Women’s Hockey team will be taking part in a Military Appreciation game.

They’ll be hosting Waterloo on Saturday at Memorial Gardens.

Head coach Darren Turcotte says the uniform scheme is being kept a secret until the team skates out on the ice for puck drop and something the players wanted.

“We put a lot of time and effort into the actual uniforms. We’re pretty excited to show them off on Saturday,” he says.

Lakers forward Ava Keis says she can’t wait

“The men’s team typically has the same style of jersey each year. With our inaugural game we went big and we wanted the reveal of the uniform to be part of the hype of the game,” she says.

22 Wing Commander Col. Mark Lachapelle says this event is a big deal.

“Hockey is hockey. It doesn’t matter what your gender is. Getting out and playing a game and doing something for the community is a win-win situation,” he says.

The uniforms worn will be auctioned off after the game with funds supporting the Military Family Resource Centre. Game time is 7:30.

$32,000 has been raised by the Lakers for the MFRC from 11 military appreciation games like this.
