North Bay Police report a chlorine leak at the Sewage Treatment Plant has been successfully contained and Memorial Drive is back open.

North Bay Fire crews were dispatched to what was described as a small chlorine leak just after 9 o’clock this morning (Tuesday).

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley said the Haz Mat team was on site.

“We entered the area with our level a suits and were able to turn off the affected valves. We determined with the help of engineering staff that there was a faulty leak with 1 of the valves,” he says.
Whiteley says most of the gas was contained in the room.

“There was very little that got to the outside. We did evacuate the surrounding houses as a precaution. For the buildings north of the treatment plant we did ask them to shut down their air handling systems as a precaution while we were dealing with the emergency,” Whiteley says.

At the time officials closed down Memorial Drive and the pathways, asking motorists to stay clear of the area.

The road was back open just before 11:30 am.

Whiteley says the fire department, the engineering staff at the treatment plant and EMS worked well together during the incident.
